Formula 1 News : FIA defers waste energy systems

The FIA has decided to postpone technology changes, intended to recycle waste energy on F1 cars, to 2011. Formula One's governing body announced on Tuesday that the 2010 regulations, which include the re-usage of exhaust vapours to propel the cars, would be put off a year to coincide with a potentially new engine formula.

Toyota returned to action at the Bahrain International Circuit on Tuesday. Ralf Schumacher and Jarno Trulli were at the wheel as the team tried out aerodynamic updates and worked on set-up after the endurance runs of last week. Both drivers had a mixed morning, with Jarno's car needing repairs for a minor clutch issue while Ralf spun. Ralf slightly hurt his back when his car bounced over the kerb and, after a massage, the decision was taken to allow him to rest in order to ensure he is fully fit for Wednesday.

Today the Spyker team returned to the 4.653km Circuit de Catalunya near Barcelona, Spain, for a further three-day test programme. Following three days' intensive testing at the same circuit two weeks ago and a second test at Valencia last week, today the team concentrated on improving aerodynamic performance, optimising set-up and conducting race simulations.

Ferrari made a clean sweep at the top of the timesheets, with Felipe Massa and Kimi Räikkönen setting the fastest laps of the Bahrain International Circuit, as official Formula One testing resumed for a second three days of testing. The headlines, however, were made by Renault's new Finnish star Heikki Kovalainen after a heavy impact with the Turn 7 barriers brought an end to his day's running and extensive damage to his R27.
