For the Turkish Grand Prix both BMW Sauber F1 Team drivers have again made it into the top ten qualifying session. For Robert Kubica this was for the 23rd consecutive time, while for Nick Heidfeld it was the 28th time in a row. In Istanbul Kubica qualified fifth and Heidfeld ninth - therefore the aim of both of them is to pick up positions in the race.
Qualifying today brought third pole position of the season for Ferrari, the second for Felipe Massa. The Istanbul circuit continues to be propitious for the Brazilian driver, as this is the third consecutive time that he has been quickest in qualifying for this race. It was Felipe's eleventh career pole, bringing to 198 the number of times that the Scuderia has started from the top position on the grid.
Nelson Piquet's qualifying session was short-lived as the Brazilian was unable to progress into Q2 and will start the race from the eighth row of the grid. Fernando Alonso fared better, progressing to the top ten shootout once again, as he confirmed the pace he had shown throughout practice and took seventh.
McLaren Mercedes drivers Heikki Kovalainen and Lewis Hamilton will start Sunday's Turkish Grand Prix in Istanbul from second and third on the grid respectively. This is Heikki's best ever Formula 1 qualifying position. In the third part of Saturday's qualifying, Heikki was second fastest with a 1m27.808, 191 thousandths of a second behind pole position. Lewis followed in third spot with a 1m27.923.
