Britain’s Lewis Hamilton would be leading this year’s world championship if the points system had not been changed. Under last year’s rules, the McLaren star would lead Red Bull’s Mark Webber by two points instead of trailing him by four. Red Bull lead McLaren by eight points in the constructors’ standings, but they would be level pegging based on the 2009 system.

Overall do you think this new point system is better or worse from the fans perspective?

It looks like good old Bernie Ecclestone is thinking about changing the F1 Points system. It seems he feels the 2 point gap between first place and second place isn’t a big enough reward. Bernie suggests that with only 2 extra points for a win many drivers would be tempted to settle for second place.

I’m not convinced this is true. From what I know of F1 race drivers their outlook is there is winning and then there is everything else. Points are great but I don’t think any F1 driver is going to say to himself … Well, I could win this race but it’s only an extra couple of points so I’ll just sit back and take second place. I just don’t think it’s the sort of thing a driver is gonna think.

Bernie also suggests that the championship should be based on wins alone, in other words five wins and the rest DNF is champion over 4 wins and the rest second place. I think you are Wrong Wrong Wrong Bernie! F1 Rewards speed and consistency, not just speed once in a while.

Sure, Give more points for 1st place but don’t base the championship on just wins.
