Bernie Ecclestone Wants To Change F1 Points System
March 12th, 2007It looks like good old Bernie Ecclestone is thinking about changing the F1 Points system. It seems he feels the 2 point gap between first place and second place isn’t a big enough reward. Bernie suggests that with only 2 extra points for a win many drivers would be tempted to settle for second place.
I’m not convinced this is true. From what I know of F1 race drivers their outlook is there is winning and then there is everything else. Points are great but I don’t think any F1 driver is going to say to himself … Well, I could win this race but it’s only an extra couple of points so I’ll just sit back and take second place. I just don’t think it’s the sort of thing a driver is gonna think.
Bernie also suggests that the championship should be based on wins alone, in other words five wins and the rest DNF is champion over 4 wins and the rest second place. I think you are Wrong Wrong Wrong Bernie! F1 Rewards speed and consistency, not just speed once in a while.
Sure, Give more points for 1st place but don’t base the championship on just wins.
