Wooden Car, Made by Hand. The Tryane II

March 13th, 2007

I saw this while surfing the web and thought that while it’s not exactly formula one it does speak to some of the ideals of formula one and my love for all things automobile. Who wouldn’t fall in love with a car that is so obviously a labour of love. Check out this beauty and the story linked below for more information on the process that gave this artwork a life on wheels.

Bernie Ecclestone Wants To Change F1 Points System

March 12th, 2007

It looks like good old Bernie Ecclestone is thinking about changing the F1 Points system. It seems he feels the 2 point gap between first place and second place isn’t a big enough reward. Bernie suggests that with only 2 extra points for a win many drivers would be tempted to settle for second place.

I’m not convinced this is true. From what I know of F1 race drivers their outlook is there is winning and then there is everything else. Points are great but I don’t think any F1 driver is going to say to himself … Well, I could win this race but it’s only an extra couple of points so I’ll just sit back and take second place. I just don’t think it’s the sort of thing a driver is gonna think.

Bernie also suggests that the championship should be based on wins alone, in other words five wins and the rest DNF is champion over 4 wins and the rest second place. I think you are Wrong Wrong Wrong Bernie! F1 Rewards speed and consistency, not just speed once in a while.

Sure, Give more points for 1st place but don’t base the championship on just wins.

Bugatti Veyron at top speed (video) - 407 km/h! Wow.

March 6th, 2007

Just thought I would drop in a video of a scary fast car.

It’s The bugatti Veyron and it will only cost you about £830,000. Small change really.

Check out this video to see just how scary this car really is!

Was it fast enough for you?

I want one!

Brake Lights On F1 Cars?

March 4th, 2007

Can it be true? Are they really testing brake lights on Formula one cars?

According to a report over at F1-Live that is exactly what they are doing.

It would seem that several of the teams were testing brake lights in Bahrain including Toyota, Super Aguri, McLaren, Renault and Ferrari. It looks like they hook them up to the red rain light.

The speculation seems to be that it may be introduced as a safety measure. Does anyone other than me have the opinion that if you need brake lights on the car in-front of you in an F1 race then perhaps you should not be driving a Formula One car?

What’s it gonna be next? Turn signals?

Maybe a baby on board sign?

Environmentalists Hate Honda’s Earth Car?

March 2nd, 2007

It would seem that not all the “Green” folks are behind Honda’s attempt to do something positive for the environment. Friends of the Earth has pointed out how Ironic it is for a car manufacturer to be asking people to help the environment when in their opinion…

“There is some irony in the fact that Honda are attempting to promote the environment and calling on others to address environmental issues when they are contributing to climate change by participating in what is probably the most polluting sport on the planet.”

What I find silly about this is that Honda is getting the abuse for “Trying” to do something even remotely green while the other F1 teams are ignored by people like Friends of the Earth. Friends of the Earth also completely ignore the fact that maybe, just maybe, some of the technology that goes into making current cars cleaner and more efficient was contributed to in some small way by the research performed by F1 racing teams and others.

Now, Don’t get me wrong, I’m not saying there isn’t an element of opportunism in the whole Honda Green car Idea, I mean, Green is popular these days so why not? But if one is going to acknowledge that then one also has to accept that these so called “Friends of the Earth” are doing exactly the same thing by grabbing the coat tails of the Honda machine and screaming for a little press for themselves.

The reality is nearly every creature on this planet is motivated by their own self interests, be that creature a special interest group or a massive corporation so why not just sit back and enjoy the race…
