Until 2009, 1987 had been the only year not to feature a Canadian Grand Prix since the event switched to Montreal in 1978. Although the track's layout may have changed since a time when the semi-street circuit hosted the season finale, its habit of delivering peculiar happenings in races remains to this day.

The Canadian Grand Prix dates back to 1967, when it first joined the calendar with a race at Mosport Park, which continued to host the event until 1977. However, Mont-Tremblant took the reigns twice in between (1968 and 1970) and the race took a year's sabbatical in 1975. Two years later, Montreal's Circuit de Gilles Villeneuve made its first appearance before it later took the name of its maiden pole-sitter.
