Concerns about the weather at Sepang caused a number of teams to complete their qualifying laps earlier than they would have liked, guarding against being impacted by the rain which fell suddenly and heavily in the GP2 Asia race after qualifying on Saturday.

Red Bull Racing team bosses have insisted their car is of sound design and is safe to compete in this weekend's Malaysian Grnad Prix. The team was asked to explain itself after David Coulthard suffered a peculiar suspension failure during Friday practice.

Heikki Kovalainen and Lewis Hamilton will start Sunday's Malaysian Grand Prix from eighth and ninth position respectively after both drivers were given a five grid position penalty. The McLaren team has said in a statement that they accept the stewards' decision but also stated that its drivers did not block the other drivers deliberately.

Both McLaren drivers will be moved five places down the grid for blocking other drivers in Saturday's qualifying session. Both Hamilton and Kovalainen were investigated by the stewards after qualifying after receiving complaints from Heidfeld and Alonso.

Renault enjoyed a reasonably satisfying afternoon as Fernando Alonso and Nelson Piquet qualified in 9th and 13th places for tomorrow's Malaysian Grand Prix.

McLaren drivers under investigation

Heikki Kovalainen and Lewis Hamilton have been summoned by race stewards at Sepang, after Nick Heidfeld and Fernando Alonso complained that they had been blocked at the end of qualifying by the two McLarens.

McLaren Mercedes drivers Heikki Kovalainen and Lewis Hamilton will start Sunday's Malaysian Grand Prix at the Sepang Circuit from the second row of the grid. Heikki was third fastest with a time of 1m36.613 whilst Lewis's time of 1m36.709 means that he will start from fourth.

Honda enjoyed a solid qualifying session in Malaysia today, once again coming close to achieving a position in the top 10. Jenson Button will start tomorrow's Malaysian Grand Prix from 11th place and Rubens Barrichello from 14th. 

Engine change for Bourdais

BMW Sauber drivers, Robert Kubica and Hick Heidfeld, came sixth and seventh respectively in the qualifying session for the Malaysian Grand Prix. The BMW Sauber F1 Team is the only one that has managed to bring both cars into the top ten of qualifying for the twentieth consecutive time. 

It's tough for Williams

Both Ferraris will start the Malaysian Grand Prix from the front row: Felipe Massa set the best time in Q3 and alongside him on the grid will be his team mate Kimi Raikkonen. This is the seventh pole from ten starts at this circuit for Scuderia Ferrari Marlboro and it brings the Scuderia's overall total to 196.

Red Bull Racing got more than it expected in qualifying at Sepang as Mark Webber put his car eighth on the grid and David Coulthard recovered from his suspension problem on Friday to qualify twelfth.

An encouraging day for Super Aguri

Toyota put in another impressive qualifying performance as Jarno Trulli put his car fifth on the grid and Timo Glock was tenth. 

After a good run in the Australian Grand Prix, Scuderia Toro Rosso landed back down in Malaysia with a thump as Vettel and Bourdais could not manage any better than 15th and 19th on the grid respectively.

Williams endured a tough qualifying session today that will see the team start tomorrow's Malaysian Grand Prix from P16 and P22. However, with the freedom to choose fuel loads for both cars, the team has a degree of opportunity to plan a strategy to make the best of difficult circumstances. 

Super Aguri experienced an encouraging day, as both Takuma Sato and Anthony Davidson found a small improvement in pace for the second day of the 2008 Malaysian Grand Prix weekend.

The Force India Formula One Team again got within touching distance of making it through to Q2 in the qualifying session for Sunday's Malaysian Grand Prix. Giancarlo Fisichella, the 2006 Malaysian Grand Prix winner, was just 0.05secs from making it into the top 16 and just over one second off the fastest time of the session.

Felipe Massa stormed to pole position for the Malaysian Grand Prix on Saturday, leading a Ferrari fight-back with Kimi Raikkonen 0.5s behind in second place. Heikki Kovalainen qualified third ahead of Lewis Hamilton but the McLaren pair are almost a full second off Massa's pace.

Heidfeld edges out Ferraris in session that answers few questions

BMW Sauber F1 driver Nick Heidfeld was the fastest driver on track at Sepang on Saturday morning. The German even managed to complete the fastest lap of the weekend so far, showing a promising pace for today's qualifying session. Heidfeld was followed by Ferrari drivers Raikkonen and Massa.
