Scuderia Toro Rosso had a split day today between Sebastian Vettel who ended up fifth fastest overall and Sebastien Bourdais who suffered a gearbox problem which limited him to one lap in the second session.

It was a difficult day for Red Bull Racing at Sepang today with David Coulthard damaging his car in the first session and Mark Webber going on to finish only 16th after he suffered an engine failure earlier in the morning.

Williams team completed a full programme of preparatory work in today's two practice sessions for this Sunday's Malaysian Grand Prix, interrupted only by a problem with a clutch release bearing for Kazuki Nakajima in the morning session, which was quickly rectified. With a new asphalt surface at the Sepang Circuit, a wide variety of setup options were tried and all-important tyre options progressed ahead of a final hour of practice tomorrow morning. Weather reports suggested a possibility of rain, but both sessions were completed in the dry despite the humidity nudging 72% later in the afternoon.

Hot and humid conditions remained throughout the day as both drivers completed busy programmes of set-up work and tyre evaluation. Fernando was hampered with gearbox problems in the afternoon, depriving him of second gear, but the team opted not to make a change to continue with its scheduled programme. Nelson enjoyed a trouble-free day, covering a total of 71 laps, as the team concentrated on giving the young Brazilian maximum mileage ahead of his second Grand Prix.

A productive day's running for Williams

Honda enjoyed a positive start to what is one of the most demanding grand prix weekends of the year for both car and driver. At the conclusion of the opening free practice sessions, Jenson Button was lying in fourth position whilst team-mate Rubens Barrichello ended the day in 11th place. 

Frustrating admit's Red Bull's Horner

Over the two free practice sessions for the Malaysian Grand Prix, the two F2008 of Kimi Raikkonen and Felipe Massa completed around one hundred laps. The day's technical programme, as usual for a Friday, centred on finding the best set up on the car and a comparison of the two types of tyre brought to the track by Bridgestone. Despite losing a bit of time in the morning session because of a misunderstanding between the pit wall and the garage left Kimi stranded on the track with no fuel, the programme was completed with almost no technical problems.

The Vodafone McLaren Mercedes team completed today's two 90-minute test sessions without any major problems. Lewis Hamilton faced a small gearshift problem in the morning but both the Briton and his team mate Kovalainen were positive about the completed programme.

In Friday's first free practice session Robert Kubica suffered from a gearbox problem. The team decided to change his gear box which lost Kubica some valuable time on track. After the session Kubica said that even though he ended eighth in today's free practice, there is still more to come.

Australian Grand Prix winner Lewis Hamilton completed the fastest lap on Friday in the second free practice session. The Briton was just ahead of Ferrari drivers Felipe Massa and Kimi Raikkonen. Button and Vettel showed competitive times as they ended fourth and fifth.

Felipe Massa heads a Ferrari one-two in first practice at the Malaysian Grand Prix, with Lewis Hamilton more than a second behind.

Coulthard misses second session

David Coulthard will not be able to compete in Friday's second free practice session. The Scotsman's RB4 sustained substantial peripheral damage in the first free practice session when he hit the kerbs and broke his suspension.

The Red Bull team faced a difficult start of the Malaysian Grand Prix weekend. David Coulthard's session ended after 45 minutes when he flew off the track and his suspension broke, while Webber's session ended 20 minutes later when his Renault engine gave up on him. Team boss Horner is still confident though for the upcoming weekend.

Felipe Massa was clearly the fastest man on Friday morning at the Sepang International Circuit. The Brazilian's fastest lap time, a 1m35,392, was over a second faster than his team-mate Kimi Raikkonen, though the Finn had to face another engine problem. Heikki Kovalainen ended third, followed by Nico Rosberg in fourth.

Massa quickest, as Raikkonen and Red Bull continue to suffer
