The Force India Formula One Team was today desperately close to achieving its objective of entering the second segment of qualifying for the Australian Grand Prix, the opening round of the 2008 FIA Formula One World Championship. After a strong performance throughout the weekend, both Giancarlo Fisichella and Adrian Sutil were just under a second from putting the VJM01 into the top 16, and will start in 17th and 19th respectively.
The Super Aguri team struggled on Saturday, the first Qualifying day of the 2008 season with Sato 20th on the grid and Davidson 22nd.
One driver on the second row and the other on the eighth: these are the positions the two Ferraris will occupy on the grid for tomorrow's Australian Grand Prix. Felipe Massa finished qualifying in fourth spot, while Kimi Raikkonen, sixth in Q1, was unable to return to the pits at the end of his timed run because of a problem with the electronic fuel pump, which forced him to stop a few metres from the start of pit lane.
It was a difficult afternoon for the Renault team and there were mixed feelings after seeing Fernando Alonso and Nelson Piquet qualify 11th and 21st for tomorrow's Australian Grand Prix in Melbourne's Albert Park.
David Coulthard may have qualified in eight place, but Red Bull Racing was left feeling that it could have done even better in qualifying for the Australian Grand Prix after Mark Webber spun out of qualifying and ended up fifteenth after a problem with his car.
Honda enjoyed a positive first qualifying session of the year at Albert Park. Rubens Barrichello and Jenson Button both set times less than 0.2s shy of the top 10 and they will start tomorrow's 58-lap race from 11th and 13th positions respectively.
McLaren Mercedes driver Lewis Hamilton achieved the first pole position of the 2008 Formula 1 Word Championship. In the third part of qualifying for the Australian Grand Prix in Melbourne, Lewis set a time of 1m26.714 and took his seventh career pole one year after his first ever Formula 1 race. His team mate Heikki Kovalainen qualified third fastest with a time of 1m27.079 which is the Finn's highest ever Formula 1 qualifying position.
At the opening race of what is its third season the BMW Sauber F1 Team achieved its best ever qualifying result to date. In Melbourne Robert Kubica qualified in second position. Nick Heidfeld finished fifth in the expected breathtaking first battle of the year. In Q2, the part of qualifying that tells even more about the cars' performance, Kubica and Heidfeld where second and fourth. In the morning's third free practice they had been the leaders of the pack.
The Williams team showed a steady start to their 2008 campaign, qualifying the two FW30s in P7 and P14 respectively. Both drivers graduated to the second qualifying session comfortably, but a red flag in the second session required a revised running strategy which cost Nakajima track time and Rosberg a valuable set of new option tyres. Nevertheless, both drivers will start tomorrow's race confident that they can show well, with Nico Rosberg looking to lead the charge for all-important early season points.
Sebastian Vettel won the first battle with Champ Car champion team mate Sebastien Bourdais as he qualified a remarkable tenth and Bourdais ended up 17th.
Jarno Trulli held true to his predictions that Toyota would surprise a few people at Albert Park by qualifying sixth for tomorrow's Grand Prix.
